In Essence, Not Appearance——From Ren Bonian to Xu Beihong is the first exhibition of Xu Beihong’s collection of paintings by Ren Bonian (1840-1895) in the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum. Through side-by-side comparison, it demonstrates Ren Bonian’s influence on Xu Beihong (1895-1953) in his mission to improve Chinese painting. Xu Beihong admired Ren Bonian’s capturing the essence of his human figures and introduced Ren’s work to audience in China and Europe.
