Nation and Era—Xu Beihong’s Themes and Creative Process exhibition

Nation and EraXu Beihong’s Themes and Creative Process exhibition is presented by the National Art Museum of China and the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum.

Time: January 25, 2018 – March 4, 2018.

Location: Gallery 1, 8, 9 in the National Art Museum of China.

The exhibition features 118 works, including Xu Beihong’s historical paintings symbolic of his era, which are looked at from three aspects. The first aspect is titled National Spirit, displaying Xu Beihong’s representative works, including The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains, Awaiting the Deliverer, Water Carriers of Sichuan, The World Peace Congress, and Join Forces in Tokyo. The second aspect is titled Studies, showing drawings and studies which Xu Beihong did in preparation for his creative works such as The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains. Many of these drawings are exhibited for the first time. The third aspect is titled Concern for the Country, displaying Xu Beihong’s Horse, Lion, and Eagles along with his drawings leading up to the finished paintings. He used these animals as symbols to express concern for his country.

A seminar was held on the opening day in conjunction with the exhibition. Mr. Wu Weishan, Director of the National Art Museum of China, presided over the seminar. It focused on the three aspects of the exhibition, exploring Xu Beihong’s artistic practice and advocacy, as well as the relationship between nation and era expressed in his works.
